From Washington DC, we did a day trip up to Gettysburg, PA. Of course this is where is great battle during the Civil War was fought where 40,000 died and 20,000 were wounded. Gettysburg is a 10 square mile museum and we got an audio CD to give us a guided tour.

The day we happened to show up was the anniversary of the battle, July 2. Because of this they had some Civil War re-enactors around the battlefield. Here we camp across some southerners that showed us how the men lived and fought during the war.

Gettysburg area has been preserved since the battle so driving through the are there are no new buildings, etc. you get e pretty good feel for how it was in the 1860's.

This is the point of the final battle, where the south, which was clearly winning this campaign, made a couple of major mistakes and ended up losing the battle and retreating back into the south. The wood fence in the middle of the image below was there during the battle. (an earlier version anyway) After the battle someone took a 16 foot piece of timber from the fence and count more the 800 pieces of lead from the battle, there was so many shots being fired here.
